Before you strip the bed in a panic, it helps to know that mosquitoes, fleas and bed bugs each leave a different signature, and learning to read it is the fastest way to work out whether the marks on your skin are bed bug bites or something far less worrying.

Patterns and Location of Bed Bug Bites

Pattern is the strongest clue you have. Bed bugs feed while you sleep, so the marks concentrate on skin that was outside the covers overnight, and they often appear in short rows or tight clusters where a bug fed more than once as it moved along.

Location rules suspects out as much as in. Marks mostly around the feet and ankles point to fleas, which is the classic sign in homes with cats and dogs. Random single bumps after an evening in the garden point to mosquitoes. Rows of welts across a shoulder or back that were not there at bedtime deserve a much closer look at the bed itself.

Symptoms of Bed Bug Bites

The bites cause redness, irritation and swelling, and the itch is usually what gets noticed first. Reactions vary a great deal from person to person: some people come up in obvious welts, while others sharing the same bed show almost nothing, which is one reason infestations can build quietly.

Bed bugs are not considered spreaders of disease, but the broken sleep, the itching and the worry are more than enough reason to act. Resist scratching, keep the area clean, and see a pharmacist or doctor about relief if the reaction is strong. Then turn your attention from the symptom to the source.
