Spider Protection & Control fact sheet
About spiders
- Spiders are not insects ! There are quite distinct morphological differences between insects and spiders
- Possession of eight legs (insects 6)
- Fused head/thorax – cephalothorax
- No antennae
- Most spiders are active at night, hunting or trapping insects, small animals and some times other spiders
Helpful hints
- Clean up debris outside. Clean up compost piles, old boards, woodpiles, rocks, rubbish etc that can harbour spiders. Exercise caution & wear gloves & shoes at all times
- Keep garages, cellars, verandahs, crawl spaces etc clean, uncluttered & dry. This will deny spiders harbourage, food and water sources that all encourage breeding
- Plant trees & shrubs far enough away from walls so light & wind penetrates between the building & foliage. This denies harbourage & discourages climbing from plants
Did you know?
- Spiders are carnivores they eat other inescts. So controlling cockroaches, ants & other bugs will deny them food & discourage infestation
- During summer female Redbacks construct up to 5 cream-coloured egg sacs, collectively containing up to 200 eggs. The spiderlings hatch after two weeks and disperse by ballooning
- Females Redbacks mature after 5 to 6 months and may live up to three years, but males only live about six months
- Spiders eat old webs before spinning new ones
